Anna Piaggi

Anna Piaggi is about 80 today, she still dyes her hair of blue since 1989 and she hasn’t left her house without an hat since the early ’80s. Looking like a Circus character just came out from a drama, she’s a talented fashion journalist and editor for Vogue Italia and also a very competent history of costume and taste critic.

Italian born but New York based, she started her carrier in fashion journalism, after a diploma in classical studies, writing for several magazines like Panorama, Arianna, Settimana Incom and then Vanity, an avant-garde magazine of which she was Editor-in-chief, working with the illustrator Antonio Lopez in the 1980s. Since 1988 she is famous for her column “Doppie pagine” or double pages, for Italian Vogue, from which a book “Fahion Algebra” was based on and an exhibition has been dedicated to her at London Albert &Victoria Museum in 2006, called “Fashion-ology”.

Doppie Pagine is an unconventional 4 pages column where she compares symbols, images and similar elements from different fashion shows. She’s able to read clothes and turn them into language. Anna, together with the photographer Bardo Fabiani, try to capture images, details, scenes and situations that mostly pass unnoticed to others.

Among her dearest friends are Karl Lagerfeld, Stephen Jones, Vivienne Westwood, Manolo Blahnik, Rosita and Ottavio Missoni and she was married to the photographer Alfa Castaldi since 1962 until his death in 1995. Noted for her very personal style, a unique colourful, intellectual and carnival look, Anna Piaggi’s private collection contains over 2,865 dresses, 265 pairs of shoes, 29 fans, 932 hats, 24 aprons, 31 feather boas and I’m sure much more. She is a fashion icon since 70’s, when she used to hang out and dress up with Karl Lagerfeld, who has been drawing her since they first met in 1974 and often sketched her in the book “Anna Cronique”.

She can be often seen front row during fashion shows wearing Manolo Blahnik shoes, her fingerless gloves and hats, tilted to one side, by her close friend Stephen Jones who calls Anna his muse. She has been using a bright red manual Olivetti typewriter for her work since 1969 and, for the Fashion Details Award, she was hanging a cage-bag with a mechanical bird. I didn’t see her around during this fashion week, such a pity, but I’m sure she would have caught the attention more than any model. Here a rare video-tour inside her house (italian only).

Lei riesce a leggere i vestiti e tradurli in linguaggio.
